Before the United States entered World War II after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, a small group of American volunteers flew in combat for China. Using planes like the Curtiss P-40 in this picture, they destroyed many Japanese aircraft and disrupted their supply lines. This plane was, to put it mildly, not the most sophisticated fighter available at the time, lacking a reliable gunsight, wing tanks or bomb rack.
